We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior Manager - Power Station Performance Simulation to be involved in industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of power station

The Performance & Analysis team is the centre of excellence within Rolls-Royce SMR for the engineering analysis used to prove the performance and safety of the power station.

The Senior Manager – Power Station Performance Simulation leads multiple teams concerned with the performance of the power station as a whole – ie the nuclear reactor steam raising system, steam turbine system, condenser and cooling water system.  The required analysis capabilities need to provide:

  • steady-state performance prediction, eg. to predict net electrical power output in normal-operating scenarios;
  • transient performance prediction, eg. to predict operating conditions through normal operational transients such as startup/shutdown, and through faulted conditions – as an important input to other assessments, such as those ensuring the mechanical integrity of plant equipment.
  • a software-based plant simulator - a core capability underpinning the simulation facilities required for operator training, and the test facilities required for control system V&V.

The team is accountable for developing performance models of the generic power station design, and also of site-specific designs for customer projects, or potential-customer studies.

The Senior Manager will lead multiple teams of performance engineers to deliver and maintain this capability, as well as pulling on other engineering teams where relevant capabilities exist.

A clear vision and plan laid out for Rolls-Royce SMR’s power-station-level performance analysis capability, based on a sound understanding of the requirements placed on this by the various customer / user-communities.

Analysis capability developed in-line with the plan, building on pre-existing capabilities where applicable, and from the ground-up where required.

Appropriate quality assurance put in place around the models’ development and their outputs, including consideration for the appropriate management of uncertainty, eg via communication of confidence levels.

A high-performing power station performance team in place, with the right balance of sound technical fundamental knowledge, and ability to translate this into methods and tools that enable efficient analysis of the power station in a user-friendly way

A good understanding built of the state-of-the-art for power station modelling & simulator development industry-wide; and of relevant codes & standards.

As a senior leadership member of the new Performance & Analysis function, a positive contribution made to the development of this function – its growth, and the establishment of the right culture, processes, commercial relationships etc.

As a member of the Engineering senior leadership team, strong working relationships built with other interfacing teams – and a positive contribution made on broader strategic issues for the Engineering directorate.

Strong relationships built with interfacing teams, ensuring the analysis team are working in a collaborative manner, and getting the support they need to be efficient.
